Today I love….Silken Ladders

21 Aug

It’s so nice to know that some people are out there living their dreams…..and then sharing them with us!

Thanks to Anna for sharing this with me, and now you! Enjoy and celebrate……..

“In the North Yorkshire Moors, in a snowy dark wood, in a little log cabin……Tom and Anna hid away from the world with only their guitars to keep them company……

Inspired by their surroundings, they sang their hearts out, they wrote songs, they recorded these songs and without knowing it, created Silken Ladders.

These songs come from the heart. They sing about the bird that kept them awake outside the cabin, about sleeping rough in a cave, about Granny’s attic and the seals that live amongst the industrial waste land near their cabin in Middlesbrough. With a folky sound, their music is harmonious, uplifting, touching, melodic and original. They have been working on their first album ‘Our Lost Songs’ which is due for release in February 2010.”

Talk about a competition!!

“Tag it to win it”

This one is awesome….and even though the idea may not be original, thanks to Ikea, it’s probably the first Australian based company to attempt a facebook based viral marketing campaign….so good on them!

Guess what? It means we get free stuff!!!

But you have to be quick with those fingers on the mouse people!!

When you can get awesome, groovy items like this for free, why not give it a go??

Surf Stitch is Australia’s #1 online surf store.

Like all great surf companies, Surf Stitch began in the backyard shed of one of its creators, with a small budget and a grand vision. Now, with a showcase store in the heart of Sydney’s surfing mecca of the northern beaches and a warehouse brimming with the newest and coolest gear, Surf Stitch is ready to satisfy your hunger.

So grab all your surf gear online now!

We stock all the well known brands
such as Billabong, Rip Curl, Volcom, Rusty, Insight, Nixon, Von Zipper, Element and Tigerlily together with many other brands that are more unique and harder to find online. We pride ourselves on having the strongest range of surf hardware in the country with the experience to match (from wetsuits, deck pads and triple board bags, to comp leg ropes and fins; we have you covered). Our guys stuff includes Tees, Boardshorts, WalkShorts, Singlets, Jeans, Jackets, Hats, Watches, Sunglasses, Backpacks, Footwear and much more. Our girls range includes Swimwear, Tees, Singlets, Dresses, Boardshorts, Jeans, Skirts, Handbags, Thongs and Shoes together with all the key necessities. And don’t forget the kids and toddlers range, with swimwear, tops, rash vests and shoes – nothing too cute can be missed.

And look what the lovely, funky folks at Surf Stitch did for me and a (now) friend on Facebook – a friendly competition (within the competition) to get their customers really revved up and passing the word around to all their friends about the company! So hey, please go and take a minute and vote for Team Cat!! Just click on the pic, like the Surf Stitch page and away you go…..

Today I love….United Nude Lo Res

9 Aug

OH. MY. GOD.

Möbius

“The United Nude Möbius is the launch product of the United Nude brand. Since then it has become an icon in the world of design. Conceptually, the shoe is a möbius band where a single strip forms the sole, heel,foot-bed and upper.”

I am having major heart palpitations here at my desk folks!

For those of you that do not already know, I am a fully qualified shoemaker (Diploma Textiles, Clothing and Footwear) and I also have 5 industrial machines at home just sitting there, waiting and ready for me to use them one day. “What?!” I hear you say – “Why is she sitting on this wonderful talent??!!” Unfortunately the bills have to be paid folks and if I sat at home all day making shoes (which, mind you does take a very long time – about 4o processes go into making one pair of shoes!) I would be living in the gutter before you could say jump…..

So anyhoo, when I saw these super awesome wonderful shoes, I really appreciated the design and architecture (yes, you will see soon; I can call it that!) from a shoemaking point of view. These shoes are wonderful, beautiful and attention seeking works of art, that also look (surprisingly) very comfortable to wear. I just have to cross my fingers and toes now that they bring me a store down under in the very near future!!!

Mono Jane

The United Nude Mono Jane is a classic Mary Jane wedge molded from lightwewight material. Its sleek design equally combines comfort and elegance. Available in nine summer colours.

Eamz

The United Nude Eamz is conceptually inspired by a furniture design classic; the Charles and Ray Eames chair. The United Nude Eamz shoe is an ode to their vision.

Loop

The United Nude Loop is a revolutionary shoe silhouette, formed by dramatically molding the strongest plastics in the world. The design is based on a simple concept of penetration: a floating foot-bed slips through a sexy loop, functioning as both heel and upper.

Ruby

The United Nude Ruby is a sleek, elegant and comfortable slip-on. The Ruby features a slick molded heel that has the appearance of a smooth jewel.

Cup

The United Nude Cup is a sculptured heel piece which literally ‘cups’ the heel of a classic shoe and also acts as a backpiece. Available in four exciting new styles and a multitude of eye-popping colours.

Fold

The United Nude Fold is about the fluent movement of a single strip. The strip folds around the foot front-to-back-to-front like a scarf.

Elastic

The United Nude Elastics are all made with United Nude custom designed materials. The style is dominated by bright colours and linear patterns.

Lo Res

The United Nude Lo Res is part of a new semi-automatic design method by United Nude. An object is digitally scanned into a 3D computer model and regenerated into various resolutions. The Lo Res shoe is part of an automated design revolution.

Today I love….ecococoon

5 Aug

What a blast from the past these are!!!

I saw some of these in an op shop the other day but they weren’t in the best condition and in hindsight I am glad I didn’t part with my hard earned $ because I can now buy them brand new!!

When I was little, our family used to go out on U.F.O’s as my Mum used to call them (Definition of U.F.O = unidentified family outing. We never knew where we were being taken to so it was always a surprise and hence unidentified!). We always took these cups with us – in their little zip up leather holder….and because they were stainless steel, they were also very handy at keeping drinks cold! I would put money on it that my Mum does still have her set somewhere in the depths of her house….

The old skool set…..

The girly girl set….

The family set….

Individual cups as well!

Today I love….Rachael Treasure

30 Jul

This woman is one hell of an Aussie!!!

She is worth her weight in gold for the wonderful work she does for working sheep dogs, women, their families and rural farming communities in this country.

What a woman she is!!!

As Rachael herself says:

“My life is made rich with the presence of animals in my life. I adore my sheep (Crossbreds and Merinos) and Hereford Cattle that are raised on all natural grass.

Our dogs are part of our family. We have both Kelpies and Collies, a Springer Spaniel for truffle harvest and a cheeky Jack Russell that’s great on cleaning my kitchen floor.

We use our horses for both social outings (riding down to the bar at the cricket club) or working stock on the farm. We also breed a few foals using good Aussie stockhorse or Waler genetics.”

My Mum got me reading her books and now I just can’t put them down – well, now I can because I have read them all and I need Rachael to write more for me and her many other fans!!

Today I love….Athletic Dress

30 Jul

I love this dress….

Although I don’t love the look on the models’ face….

I also don’t love the price…..

So I might just have to find a nice long jumper/top from the local little strip shop clothing store and alter it to be similar….

All About Eve Athletic Dress

The other option is to get a basic long sleeve t-shirt pattern and alter it yourself! Or perhaps you could find a scoop neck t-shirt in your wardrobe and make a pattern from that, then sew it up in a fleecy fabric….

This pattern from Burda is not too bad:

Find it here

It is a very easy piece to make…..

Now THAT sounds like a plan….stay tuned!!! This will be my upcoming Spring Fashion project!

Bonds make an oversized sloppy Joe that is kinda getting there….and you might be lucky enough to find it on special somewhere….

One of my winter lusts was this jumper below and I recently found it on sale so it is now on it’s way to my sticky little hands!!! Knowing Melbourne and it’s weather I should have a chance to wear it while it is still cold and then stockpile it for next year.

Today I love….Pretty Little Mistakes

29 Jul

I stumbled upon this book by accident at my local library….

After reading the concept I was sold!

I was totally in love with the Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was younger and this book is along the same lines….except it is chick-lit….and it is in-your-face baby!

I got shot in the face with a .38 in a traffic dispute the first time I read this book! Wow! That one shocked me! The next time I chose my own path, I was addicted to meth and killed by cervical cancer….the next time I also died a horrible death….unfortunately I have not yet found a happy ending in this book but I figure there must be at least one out of a possible one hundred and fifty endings!! Apologies if some of this post does not make sense – back pain is my friend tonight folks….

Today I love….The Zenchilada

12 Jul

Food for Body, Mind and Spirit….

Well, that’s never a bad thing!

I love, love, love a good foodie magazine!

Here is the latest offering and the best thing about it – it’s completely free!!!

Each issue focuses on a particular topic – this one is corn and I am looking forward to the next one – “What came first – the chicken or the egg?”

Epicurious says:

“Food magazines are dead and dustbin bound. We all know that to be true.

Zenchilada, a digital mag, which just published its first issue, begs to differ.

Published out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and edited by Ronni Lundy, a rock star of a scribe who made her bones in Kentucky, writing about the food and music of Appalachia, Zenchilada offers a broad view of culinary culture.

Ronni’s take on food is inclusive. In this first issue she surveys peoples and places where corn matters.

Marilou Awiakta, the Cherokee poet, gets her say.  So does a corn smut fetishist. And Matt Rowley, a moonshine historian. Corncob wine is on offer. And so are cornmeal cookies, baked in the Italian tradition.

Zenchilada, which publishes articles with mellifluous titles like “Whole Lot of Slakin Going On,” is a hopeful shot across the bow at those pessimists who believe that smart words and good food are no longer copacetic partners. Read it”

Today I love….Living Below the Line

9 Jul

I love, love, love being frugal (read: tight-ass)….

Living below the line…Hmmmm….

Is is really that hard? We can all do that can’t we?

Especially in these tough times….

I am sure we can all use an extra dollar or two and then help out others by putting this money to a good cause….

The Global Poverty Project’s vision is a world without extreme poverty within a generation.Imagine if you only had $2 to get by on each day…

This is the challenge faced daily by 1.4 billion people living under the extreme poverty line. Today it is the challenge we are asking you to undertake.

From the 2nd – 6th August, we invite you to Live Below the Line – to live on less than AU$2 of food per day.

For five days in August you will experience one of the basic challenges faced daily by those living in extreme poverty – struggling to obtain the basic food reqiurements each day. You will sacrifice the things you take for granted… Your resourcefulness will be put to the test… But it will become one of the most rewarding weeks of your life.

Your involvement will not only be enlightening to yourself. It will engage your friends and family to be challenged by some of the realities of extreme poverty.

It will also enable you to fundraise towards your choice of two causes that are working towards a world without poverty: the resourcing of new schools for remote communities in cambodia, or the Global Poverty Project’s Poverty Education Program.

The eat on only $2 a day theory is workable and proven here by one participant with a shopping list and meal plan….

08 Jul 2010 by Sarah

When I first signed up to Live Below the Line, I planned on doing it as an individual, not as a team. I didn’t really feel comfortable asking my friends to put themselves out of their comfort zones. I was pleasantly surprised to find though, that just by chatting with a few people about what I was going to do, I had volunteers waving their hands to join! I’m actually heading overseas at the beginning of August, so I will be Living Below the Line next week. Thanks to my wonderful friends, I’ll be doing it in a team of three. This is a rough shopping list I’ve put together for us to work from:

5 day Shopping List for a Team of 3

900 grams Coles Smart buy Oats – $1.30

2 Litres Coles milk (full cream)  – $2.10

1 kg Coles smart buy raw sugar – $0.97

Bread x2 – $2.20

Eggs (a dozen) – $1.99

Stock cubes (6) – $.0.75

1 kg Lentils (red) – $4.63

1 kg Coles long grain white rice – $2.45

Fresh fruit and veg from market (I’ll be looking for things like potatoes, onion, garlic, pumpkin, leek, broccoli, carrots, bananas and oranges, plus any oil/butter, spices etc) – $13.61

TOTAL: $30

Meal plan:

Day 1:

Breakfast: 1 serve of oats – 100grams (maybe a little bit more for my two male counterparts), cooked with water and 50mls of milk, tablespoon of raw sugar. Also plan on finding some nice ripe bananas at the Vic market this weekend for mushing into the porridge. Yum!

Lunch: Rice and Dahl

Dinner: Soup and toast

Day 2:

Breakfast: Egg on toast (if this isn’t filling enough, a small serve of porridge as well)

Lunch: Mashed potato (potatoes + small amount of butter and milk) and steamed veg + Snack of fruit

Dinner: Soup

Day 3:

Breakfast: Porridge

Lunch: Rice and Dahl

Dinner: Potato Omelette

Day 4:

Breakfast: Egg on toast (+ porridge)

Lunch: Mashed potatoes and steamed veg + fruit snack

Dinner: Soup

Day 5:

Breakfast: Porridge with banana

Lunch: Rice and Dahl

Dinner: Soup

I’ve also included a mock shopping list and meal plan for individuals just to illustrate the difference.

5 day shopping list for Individuals

Fruit and Vegies from market – $5.00

Loaf of bread (20 slices) – $1.00

Peanut butter – $1.50

Dozen cage eggs – $2.00

Meal Plan:

Day 1 – 5:

Breakfast: 2 eggs on toast

Lunch/snack: Fruit and Peanut butter sandwiches

Dinner: Vegetable Soup

Honestly, I was shocked at how hard it was to write a five day shopping list for just $10. The end result seems quite limited and monotonous. This really brought the ‘lack of choice’ aspect of poverty into perspective for me – imagine having to eat the same thing EVERY DAY. I find it hard to deal with left overs from the night before! With only $10 to spend though, there really is no other option.

This shopping list is a good example of the limitations of Living Below the Line as an individual. Working as a team allows you to pool your budgets and buy products in bulk, allowing for greater variation during your week. Overall, writing these lists has really shown me how spoilt we are when it comes to the decisions we make about food, and how much more appreciation we need to develop for what we have.
